6 years ago I had a Social Security representative payee that social security themselves did a background check on and approved. She stole 40,000.00 of my money as I initially got a lump sum from them. Once I learned of my missing money I reported it and of course changed payee's. They assured me they would collect the money and return it to me. To make a long story short after filing numerous times with both social security and OIG, getting a governor, senator and congressman involved they finally started and investigating where she admitted misuse of my funds and nothing was done.
Finally several years later and after the statute of limitations had run out, they sent a letter informing her she would have to repay the money, I'm sure she had a good laugh at that. Bottom line is she stole 40,000.00 without any criminal charges filed and little or no repercussion. Evidently Payee theft is OK if she can take that much and get away with it anything less must be simple. A rampant problem and very little if nothing is ever done to protect those that need it the most.
